GR Units of Study Sept - Dec.
Old 06-22-2008, 02:52 PM

Clip to ScrapBook #1

Hi! I saved the wonderful plans that some VERY generous teacher shared so graciously last summer. They were VERY detailed plans for the first four units (I believe Sept - Dec) of Growing Readers.

Anyway, I have been using those plans to set up my own RW this year and I'm very excited! My question is, are there any other plans for after December? If not, I'm not sure in which direction I should go come January with my second graders. Do I just start a month study on each reading strategy (Connections, Questioning, Visualizing, etc.)? Please give me some guidance in the right direction.

Thanks a bunch!

Looking for plans

Is there anyway that you could post these plans or email them to me? I want to start using RW next year and I have visiting this room for suggestions. I've been looking through my local bookstores also for some of the mentioned resources but have had no luck - I'm going to have to order them. I have read in other posts about these plans but I haven't been able to find them when I search. Thanks for any help you can send my way.

Is this what you are thinking of? I patterned my plans after teacherdani's format. Thanks, teacherdani, if you are reading posts! My planning began the year with Growing Readers, and then moved to include Reading with Meaning. Please keep in mind that these plans were a result of my first year of RW, so I will be refining them to add depth and new books. I plan to read Collins' and Miller's new books, so I bet they will inspire me to add/improve! Let me know if this is what you are looking for.

Hi!

Thanks for sharing! I think I have teacherDani's plan, too, because the ones I have saved look very similar (all scripted out). I got them on here last summer. I only have Sept - December (Units 1-4). Do you have any other units to share?? THANK YOU SOOOOOO MUCH!!!

Asking Questions
Old 06-22-2008, 07:13 PM

Clip to ScrapBook #7

Unit 3 contained Making Connections. Unit 5 should have been unit 4. Last year, I taught nonfiction early because we were having our school science fair during that time. I thought it would lend itself to inquiry and first grade research. It was a lot of fun, but it would have been more meaningful with more teaching and learning under our belts. I will post some other units, but I will not order them. I hope they will serve as an example. These plans served just as a guideline for me... not the end result. I changed paths weekly and even day to day based on my reflections and the needs of my class and individual students.

Wow! These plans are GREAT! Thanks so much for sharing them with us. I have not worked on any detailed plans after December. I mostly stuck with RWM after December, plus ideas from other teachers on this board and it worked out just fine for me.
After I was finished with me detailed plans I went into mental images, then inferring, then asking questions. That is pretty much all I got to. Hopefully I will be able to do more with non-fiction next year (non-fiction conventions) and maybe some synthesizing.
Thanks again Luvin1st for all of your hard work!

Luvin1st,

Thank you SO much for sharing your work! It is very much appreciated! I will be sure to use it as a guideline when planning on own units of study this year!

I have a question for you since you already have a year of experience with RW. Next year will be my first year implementing RW and it's all a bit overwhelming, especially since we adopted a brand new basal. Anyway, when I sketched out my yearly plans for RW, I thought that I would need a month (or so) for each comprehension strategy. About how long did you teach each strategy once you get to schema/making connections?

Thanks for your help and for sharing your knowledge with all of us!

Teacherdani21- Thank YOU for getting us started! Looking at your plans made it very clear what I needed to do to get started. I am glad to return it in some way!

beachbumteach- My first graders are lucky enough to go to a second grade team that continues with comprehension strategies. In 1st grade, we spent on average a month or a little more on each strategy. Sometimes they needed more time. Infererring took more time than I thought we would need. They LOVED it and so did I, but they needed more time to solidify it. Connections took a while too mainly because many of my children were making connections, but they needed more time to identify the connections that would help them make more sense of the text. All in all though- about 4-6 weeks. Hope this helps

These plans look great! This may sound like a dumb question - but when I read over them, they refer to posters, songs, charts, etc. Are those resources part of a book that these plans are based on? Is it through Growing Readers or Reading with Meaning? I probably missed something, but I'm unclear about this. Any guidance would help! Thanks!

TO teacherdani and Luvin1st,

I just wanted to say thank you very much for sharing your work with all us! Last summer, I saved all of your plans (teacherdani), but I didn't know who they were from. It was all overwhelming for me last year and therefore, I gave up on RW pretty quickly. This year, I have a different attitude and I'm starting fresh and can't wait!!

Thanks again for your help and willingness to share!!!

I'm glad you like the plans. Most of the posters/charts were referenced in Reading with Meaning. All of the plans I posted were based on Debbie Miller's book, which includes photographs of many of the posters. The songs were from reading.ecb.org
If you haven't checked it out, it was a great resource supporting comprehension strategies. My first graders loved the songs and games. I loved the videos.

beachbumteach. It will get easier for you as readers workshop becomes a large part of your classroom identity. The children will often lead the way, and their conversations with you and their classmates about literacy will be so rewarding.

A huge thank you for the plans. Teacherdani, I used yours as a guide last year, and they helped so much. We are going RW schoolwide this year, so both of your plans will be a great help tp many young teachers. Thank you so much.

RW is the BEST thing that I have done for my kids. You will not believe the growth that they will make. I agree with luvin1st...just stick with it and your kids will lead the way. They will surprise you in so many ways...first graders are capable of so much (more than we give them credit for).

Thanks for posting your detailed plans! I also used Teacherdani's last year and was thrilled with the way my class learned in the workshop. (Thanks again, Teacherdani!!!!!!) I did find that my best teaching went with the flow of the kids, but these plans were such a key in helping me envision what our RW should look like.
