I am having an iclusion 2nd grade classroom next year. I found out that one of my students is autistic. I believe he can communicate and is near grade level. I'm looking for a good resource book to help educate myself on how I can best meet the needs of this student and others I may get. Any help would be appreciated!

I have had two different autistic boys in my classroom. All I can say is get ready to love them. I never have pets, but those two boys quickly became my pets. I loved them both dearly. I just treated them the way I did the others but also was very aware of the fact that they needed to be the ones to decide whether they wanted me to hug them or talk to them. Show them all the love you can, and they will let you in. I will never forget those two boys.

I have had three boys with Autism in the classroom. I agree with pp that you just need to be patient and find out what works for this child. None of the boys I had were exactly the same.

I can recommend a book though as a starting point.

I am going to be a spec ed teacher starting in the fall. I am working on my certificate but do not have it yet. I will be working with a student who has autism as well. I know I will be doing some research and reading and I am glad that you asked the question. One good website to check out is:

This book is TERRIFIC:
Ten Things Your Student with Autism Wishes You Knew by Ellen Notbohm and Veronica

and so is this one:
Ten Things Every Child with Autism Wishes You Knew by Ellen Notbohm

They are similar, but I would recommend getting them BOTH--- they are SO helpful, and quick and easy reads-- I love them BOTH. I have recommended them to parents also and the parents have found them helpful.

Also this book to read to your class, maybe, about a little girl who's best friend Will is autistic-- I love it:
My Best Friend Will by Jamie Lowell and Tara Tuchel

I just went to Amazon and ordered some of the recommended books. This is money well invested as we are seeing so many kids on the spectrum lately. Thanks again!

Paula Kluth has authored/co-authored several books that provide excellent, practical strategies for inclusion, with an emphasis on working with students on the Autism Spectrum. She's also an awesome presenter if you ever have the chance to attend a conference session of hers. Good Luck!
