F.R.O.G. Folders

Clip to ScrapBook #1

Hello everyone - I am new to this board and to Kindergarten. I was previously a Preschool Teacher/Director for 4 years. I am hoping that someone can help me out with an idea that I have.

I would like to use FROG binders/folders in my classroom for organizing parent communication and papers coming and going from school. These are also called MOOSE folders or BEE books by many teachers.

Have any of you tried this type of organizational tool? I am looking for any advice or information that you could give me.

Thanks so much!! : )

Try searching this board for Moose books. (There is a post below about them.) You can also go to www.jmeacham.com to see how she does hers.

FROG files

Clip to ScrapBook #3

I used FROG files this year with my Kindergarteners. I used a plastic three prong folder, which I don't think was very effective because there wasn't enough room to truly keep things organized. I would definitely recommend using a thin three ring binder. I also didn't teach my students to be responsible for going through and taking out money, notes etc. ,which was another big mistake because I spent a lot of time each morning looking through every folder to discover no one had anything to turn in. I am planning on using them again this year, but I will get those 3 ring poly binders and train the kids where to check for items to turn in.

Also, Jessica Meacham has a really good explanation of the sections in her BEE books as well as some printable labels and other helpful ideas on her website at jmeacham.com. Her ideas were very helpful to me last year when I was setting mine up.

I hope this helps!

I use these with great success and have copied ideas from several sites.

Parents supply the folder, protective sleeves, and pencil pouch.

I've attached my cover/explanation letter. I print labels for each protective sleeve and the parents put them on during the Kindergarten Kick Off.

Good luck

FROG question

First, thanks to MKR for attaching the letter that parents get. What a great idea.
Are the students responsible for putting the papers in the notebook at the end of the day? Do they keep them in their backpacks and just pull the items out of them that need to be turned in? OR do they pull them out of their backpacks everyday and put them in a designated spot in the room?
Thanks for all the tips.

I used BEE books in my classroom this year and they worked out really well. The students would come in every morning, take out their homework and place their binders in their desks. (I really recommend the use of the binders!). Any notes where in a special pouch so they were never lost. When it was time to pack homework and do their behavior charts they took them out of their desks. As long as it is a built in procedure the little ones can do it! My parents loved it because they always knew what was going on in the classroom - no more lost announcements, missing homework etc. Even when the binders I bought at Costco started falling apart parents replaced them because they wanted to have that communication between school and home. That was a pretty big deal in my inner-city school where parents don't buy many school supplies. At the end of the year all of my kids still had their BEE books. It helped many kids learn how to be organized and responsible.

You have to have 5 posts to be able to PM. You may want to go to the message boards and respond to other posts or post more questions of your own until you have 5 and then you can PM.

keep it simple- a folder (plastic lasts longer). Staple a calendar in there for stickers and then opposite it staple a paper for notes back and forth. Be sure parents date notes so you know when they are written. Send a note telling parents to put all money and correspondence in the pocket and as the kids are settling in the morning, check folders.

I use frog binders. They include a pouch for lunch money and notes from home.
I have pictures and a note home explaining the binders on my website.
