My classroom theme is frogs, if the user name did not give it away! ha ha This will be my 3rd year teaching and I am looking for some new ideas to use within my frog theme. Does anyone have some? I have the usual "hoppy helpers", "Leaping into a good book", etc. I wanted to make a pond for the reading corner. Any suggestions out there? I really appreciate the help! It is for a 3rd grade classroom.
Thanks!
Thank you! I love the "toad"ally awesome work and have use that often this year. Do you have the spelling words on a bulletin board? I like the idea of putting them on lily pads. Thanks again for your help. Have a great summer!
I have a bulletin board called "Leap High With Good Spelling". It has 5 big green lilypads on it.There is a frog leaping from one lilypad to another. I put 3 spelling words on a white strip of paper and attach to each lilypad. I have 15 spelling words each week. Just change the white strip each week. I take them down just before our spelling test on Thursday. My kids love it.
To go along with this bulletin board, I have spelling test incentives. If they make an "A" on the test, they get a spelling award. I grade them immediately while they have their snack time. The reward is a half sheet of colored paper with a frog leaping high into the air off the lilypad. It says "I Leaped High for My Spelling Test". They love to collect them through the year to see how many they can get.
I was trying to remember what I used...(as if it was a long time ago!).
I used a colored card system for behavior and above it was "Toad-ally Terrific Tadpoles". I also had a double-sided frog standing on back two legs with arms in air and above it I put "Don't Be a Bully-frog". I also did a spelling game with them that involved putting a blue shower curtain on the blackboard with magnets and on this shower curtain I had lily pads attached with velcro.(This way I could change it up throughout the game and they couldn't just memorize the location). Sometimes I would write the entire spelling word on an index card and sometimes I would leave off the first and last letter of the spelling word on the index card. I taped these to lily pads and we made a game using two teams. The first person in the line had to turn backwards from the board, I said what the word was and they would turn and using "frog" fly swatters I got at Dollar General the first one to find the word and swat it gave their team a point. We also did a form of "Homeworkopoly" which I used as a reward for bringing back work and getting planner signed. I found a site that had created some really cute blocks (i.e. Rib-bit Crib; Hoppy Lobby, etc.)Kids got a ticket each day if they did the above mentioned. On Friday those with X number of tickets got to roll the dice and move their frogs around the game board I put on a small bulletin board. Sometimes they landed on getting a free pencil, or a prize from the prize box or sometimes they ended up at the Science Lab--Yeeek! They seemed to love it. Sorry this is soooooooo long !!!!!!
I also have a frog theme in my classroom. I found a website that offers a game similar to Homeworkopoly, but is called the Leaping Lily Pad Game. I have adapted it for my classroom, and use it as a behavior incentive at the end of the week. If my students have been on green or yellow all week, they get to play on Friday. Things I do that haven't been posted yet:
* The Checkout Pad - Where students checkout the book they are borrowing for the night.
* Leaping to the Stars - Rocket Math - students earn a frog ( Which hangs in the front of the room) when they have passed the different levels (add, sub, mult, & div)
* Leap into 3rd Grade - Beginning of year welcome
* Welcome to Mrs. __________'s Pad - Frog displayed on classroom door.
*FROG Binders - (Fully, Responsible, Organized and Growing) like Moose Notebooks, but Frog theme
I saw the idea for the Moose notebooks and too liked the frog idea. How exactly do you use that binder? Do you send it home everyday or weekly? I read about it on the TeachingHeart website, but was wondering how it worked for you. Could you possibly explain how you used it? Thank you for all of the wonderful ideas!
I had a friend who used frogs one year, and had a bulletin board outside her classroom that said "Welcome to Fifth Grade... I'm HOPPY Your Here!" Don't remember exactly what all was on there... but I do know there were little individual frogs all over, one with each kid's name on it.
The reason I remember it so well is because when she was trying to think of some clever slogan, my daughter suggested "Got Flies?" (it was during that whole Got Milk thing... )
I was wanting to know where I could find the clip art of the frog you have posted with your message. I did find some at cutecolors.com, but I really like the little girl frog with the bow. Thanks for your help. Kim
I also use a Frog Theme. This year I bought a class pet, "Froggie"/"Webkinz". The class will name it using "Democracy". My kids love Webkinz. As a "behavior" reward, students can earn time on the computer during free activity once a week and spend time with "Froggie" or whatever they choose to call him.
I am currently in my student teaching placement and I'm getting ready for next year (first year of teaching). I am looking for more frog stuff for my room. I already have the calendar, name tags for desks, homework chart, and a bunch of little frog stuff, but can you please tell me where you got most of your stuff. On Lakeshores website there is not a lot of stuff, and time to go to the store is limited with seven classes, nannying and teaching If you have any stuff left over that you are not going to use I would love to buy it off of you!
Please let me know!
Cynthia
Forthe reading ceter you could use one of those small pools that most people use for their children in their front lawns. You could put regular or frog pillows in it and they can get in it and read. Probally two at a time...............
I use the F.R.O.G Notebooks in my third grade class. I do not use a binder but a green folder. I found that the folder actually holds up fairly well until January and we transfer everything to a new folder and use it for the rest of the school year. (I am looking for a sale on the Poly-pocket folders in green.) Inside the front cover I place items that are sent home from school like newsletters, announcements, permission forms, etc. In the back pocket I place all graded student work. I place a pencil pocket, the zippered kind, and 2 page protectors in the prongs. The zipper pocket is used to transport money to and from school, and any important notes such as doctor excuses, etc. In the first page protector I place a letter that explains the F.R.O.G folder and the weekly newsletter slides in behind that. The second page protector holds the lunch menu for the month, and the unit spelling list behind that.
I was searching for a frog/toad saying to display my student's artwork in the hallway and this is perfect! I will make a lilypad for each student's name and rotate work throughout the semester! Thanks so much! You "toad"ally rock!
