A previous post on wireless coverage got me to thinking...are there any other services you get discounts on because you are an eduator? Satellite, Cable, Internet, Insurance? If you know of a company that offers a good discount, let us know!
I am always on the lookout for discounts! Many of the bookstores (B&N, Borders, etc.) offer them. Whenever I go anywhere to purchase anything, I always ask if there is a "Teacher Discount." You'd be surprised to know how many businesses are willing to offer a them just for the asking!
One example, last year I went to a carpet business to purchase the sample squares for my students to sit on... They were selling the pieces for $2 each. When I asked about a discount, the owner said, "Take as many as you need---no charge!"
That's the best kind of discount I had my students write a nice note of thanks and we sent a picture along with it.
well here in south texas if you show your ID badge at Pappa Johns you get pizza for 50% of the cost example ... $30 pizzas for $15... my family loves this... we have a huge pizza night about once a month. So I spend about 50 or 60 dollars have a movie and pizza night with my kids and their friends for about 30 dollars.
Hotels...some will give a state gov't discount to teachers. When I book online, I always check the rates. I've not had any problems doing that and only occassionally have had to show my ID. It was actually a hotel employee checking me in that shared that with me. She was a para and saw my ID hanging on my tote bag. Now I always check.
Wish I had known that about Papa Johns though. We order from there at least once a week lately. I know some Pizza Huts do, but had never thought to ask about PJs.
We get some neat ones. Twice a year we get into Universal Studios for free. I went two weeks ago before the voucher expired. Sea World does the same thing too. The Florida Aquarium lets you get in for free as well.
I got a discount at a scrapbooking store once. I went in after work and was still wearing my id badge (which is funny because I normally put it immediately around my rearview mirror.) She gave 20% off! :-)
Wow I didn't know that we could get discounts at that many places. I also teach in FL and I take advantage of the Universal Studios/Islands of Adventure offer. I will be checking into other discounts. Thanks!
For those of you who like to shop, Ann Taylor Loft gives teachers special discount coupons several times a year. You just need to fill out some information on their website. I also just found out that J.Crew will give a 15% discount in their regular stores and factory outlet stores. You just need to mention that you are a teacher and show them an i.d card. Happy shopping!
I'm in Ohio and our OEA card gives us LOTS of discounts/coupons from around the country. If you are from Ohio, go to OEA.org and type in your number from your card....you'll be surprised at the local stuff too.....if anyone else has an Education Association card, you may want to check into that too.
I've got a 20% discount on my monthly bill and didn't have to pay for any activation charges. My fiance and I also got our phones at a much cheaper price than was listed at the stores. Just make sure you go to a corporate Verizon store!
Maybe they're afraid they'll lose money, but I think these places need to advertise that they offer discounts to teachers (or whomever they offer them to). I knew about AT&T and the local ones through our union, but I had no idea about places like Papa Johns and Pizza Hut. I think they would get a lot more teacher business if they would make the effort to let us know they are offering discounts for us.
To piggyback on luv2tchkids2's post, Oklahoma association members get a lot of great benefits. It's anything from Dillard's to Sonic to travel to insurance, etc. There is a web site where you enter your number and it links to all the great discounts. If you use the discounts enough, it also pays you back what you pay in dues each year and then some!
