I was wondering..What do you do when you teach vocabulary? How do you reinforce the vocabulary they learned the day before if your reading a novel.

Thanks In Advance

I do a few thing for vocab.

1) Flash cards: These can be used as a "memory" game. Students draw a simple picture or symbol for the word that defines it. Then, they match them up with a partner in a game like Memory.
2) Act them out. "Who can show me 'rambunctious?'" "Can you do it differently?" "Who can show me the opposite (or antonym)?"

3) A chart with the following columns: Word, Dictionary, Mine, Sentence, picture, Synonym, Antonym. You can pick and choose which ones you want, but turn the paper landscape and make boxes about 1" so they have room to work. I can post it I think... just let me know if you want to see it.

4) I make a note in my plans reminding me to use the word during the next few lessons. "So, that cat was kinda crazy, wasn't it? I'd say it was a bit ... RAMBUNCTIOUS, wouldn't you?"

5) When we reread, I have them put a finger on their nose or do deaf applause when they hear one of our vocab words in the text. Sometimes I forget and have to think about why they are doing deaf applause....

Let me know if this is helpful or if you have any further questions.

Vocabulary Workshop

We have Vocabulary Workshop workbooks. My students told me it was so boring. There are two pages of vocabulary words . . .around 12 words for each unit. We go over the definitions, sentences, synonyms, and antonyms given for the words. Then there are three or four pages for the students to work using the words in context, synonyms, and antonyms. We usually would do one or two pages together and then they would do the other one or ones independently. It really was boring, so . . . this summer I have started on some power points. I took the first unit and made power point slides for each word. On the slide I typed the word and then found pictures online that would help demonstrate the word. I plan to use these pictures as we discuss the words and definitions. Then I plan to have the power point show continuously playing as the students complete their workbook pages so they can look at them for reminders. Hopefully this will work better. I really found the Vocabulary Workshop boring, too, so I'm hoping this adds some excitement and fun to the lesson. We'll see!

vocabulary in context

First off, vocabulary does need to be taught in context to be meaningful. So it sounds like you're talking about while reading a novel, making sure the word is understood?

Well if it's a good choice to teach then it'll probably come up again in the reading so you can ask if they remember what _______means. If you can get the words in during the day too , to emphasize them, it's kind of fun too.

There are some good graphic organizers to chart vocab. too:

Vocabulary ideas

We are expected to hit vocabulary very hard this year, and one thing I intend to do is have a HUGE word wall. Since I don't have bulletin board space, I'm going to take paper and cover one side of my (small) classroom above the coat hooks and put border around it to make it look like a bulletin board. Then every time we meet a new word, it's going to go on the word wall. I always do words in context.
Then, we will go over a few of the words every day in some way - when there is five minutes, we might give oral sentences with a couple of words, define one or two of them.
I also intent to play Bingo with the words on a regular basis - I'll make up the cards and when we play, I will read definitions or give a sentence, and the kids will cover the words. We'll play for little prizes.

That's all I've thought of so far, except I will have them keep an ongoing list in their spelling/word work/vocabulary notebook.

Any thoughts on these?
