Fun Songs for 4th Grade
Old 07-09-2008, 07:17 PM

Clip to ScrapBook #1

OK...so after 9 years in kinder, I moved to 4th this past year (long story). I loved it, and am teaching it again this year. But, one of my favorite things in kinder was singing Dr. Jean (and a few other) songs every day. I did a few of them with my 4th graders this year and they LOVED it!! But, most of her songs won't work in 4th because they are targeting kinder skills. Does anyone know of something similar that is geared to 4th graders? I love to sing and act silly with my kiddos, but we can only sing Tony Chestnut and Tooty Ta so many times! Plus, it would be nice if I could find something that targets skills we are working on anyway!

Thanks!!!

I have been using Multiplication Rap. Every year some kids don't know their times tables, so I start math time with this CD. They love it and I even let them dance if they don't get too crazy.

Also, try some of those kinder songs, you never know, they might like 'em.

I taught 4th last year and I'm looking through my files to see what I have. We did several songs last year. I know that there is a Scientific Method rap but I don't have it saved. If that is something you cover in your state in 4th, you could probably Google it and find it.

Here is a water cycle song.

I, too, use music with my fourth grade. I am a huge Bruce Springsteen fan and while most of his songs won't work in the classroom - I have used a few from his Seeger Sessions CD. In Social Studies, when we travel to the Erie Canal, I play that song of his and we all sing along. And when we study Tall Tales, we sing along to his version of "John Henry." I also play classical music in the background when the kids are doing some seat work. They love it. I remember when I taught Colonial America in fifth grade and we learned cross-stitching. I had to laugh to myself watching these fifth grade boys doing their cross stitch project humming along to classical tunes!

I also just heard about Rockin' The Standards. It's some guys who have written math songs with a rock beat that reflect state standards. If you goggle "Rocking the Standards," it will come up.

And, just to add, my fourth graders love the Tooty Ta! We sing and dance to it after anything stressful (state tests, etc.) or any time we want to celebrate. It's always something they list at the end of the year that they'll always remember about fourth grade!

I love the songs from Shake and Learn. Here is the website.

They have songs in each subject area. You can buy the whole kit but you will only need the cd.

I also use Tom Chapin, one of the cd's has Big Rock Candy Mountain and Uh -Oh Accident (silly wordplay and fun), FAmily Traditions may be the title.

There's also a Folk Song CD with a neat song by Justin Roberts called Roller in the Coaster

I use this every year as a supplement to teaching homophones. It's so cute and the students really get into it. It's great if you can project the video.

Some More Music

Any of the School House Rock CDs come in handy.

I like to use music to get the kids up and moving around, so I use my Steve and Greg CDS for that. (Say Hello! and Believe in Yourself)

Ron Clark has a CD with raps for his Essential 55 and all the Presidents.

www.songsforteaching.com This site has some really hip songs for teaching. The Mind Game CD has Funky Fractiions, Verbs, Punctuation, Homonyms. You can click to listen. The kids really like these. There are other CD's to choose from.

4th grade songs

Clip to ScrapBook #18

Hi-
I also love using music with my 4th graders. I have actually written 3 songs that support our curriculum. I have 1 on the continents and oceans, 1 to teach the 13 colonies and 1 about the American Revolution. I teach them and then use as center activities. Small groups tape themselves singing and then we play it for the class. It's a riot! I would be happy to share the songs with you.

Here's one:

The Continent Song
(sing to the tune of “He’s Got the Whole World”)

We’ve got the whole globe in our hands
We’ve got the whole globe in our hands
We’ve got the whole globe in our hands
We’ve got the whole globe in our hands

We’ve got North and South America in our hands
We’ve got Europe, Asia and Africa in our hands
We’ve got Australia and Antarctica in our hands
We’ve got the whole world in our hands!
