Reading Groups Names

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I was trying to change the names of my first grade reading groups. In the past I've called each group a continent, shapes, colors, etc.. Do anyone have any other ideas for fun names. I usually have at least six guided reading groups. Thanks.

The kids find it fun to think of their own name. I usually give them about 5-10 minutes to choose a name. They all have to agree on the name and then I let them create a little poster with their group name and decoration. Its a great lesson in working together as a team. If you want you can also give them a topic such as it has to be an animal name or a sport, etc. Also, do you have a class theme. That may provide some names also.

My groups name themselves (third grade) and come up with a "symbol" for their group. They love it and it gives them ownership. I think that first graders could do the same with a little time. They learn so many things about working together and compromise when naming their own groups.

name my groups because my groups are not static. I may call back 5 kids that need to work on main idea or I may call back 5 kids that are all reading at the same level at that time. I teach 1st and kids progress at different rates so even the level groups are changing all the time. I don't want them to think of it as "moving up" to the eagles or "moving down" to the turtles.

When I taught fifth grade my groups were alittle more stable, but there was still some moving. I called them by the novel they were reading then.

It's too hard to try to name them because they switch groups depending on their needs/interests for my reading groups/book clubs. If you name them I do think either having them choose or naming them around a certain theme for your room would work.

I also do not name my groups for the reasons PP have given. My groups are not always based just on reading level, sometimes they are based on skills. Just because a child is a high reader doesn't mean they have mastered all skills. Likewise, all lower level readers don't need all skills taught. There are also times where I group according to interest.
