Earlier I had said I was going to do the literacy-ec/mc certificate. After talking to my state coordinator and some service reps at NBPTS I have realized I need to switch to ec generalist. Hopefully, because I have not sent in the 500 yet I will not be charged the 75. We'll see. I am praying that those of you (happygirl) that I have PM will still be willing to help/mentor if you can. If not, I understand.
Thanks

CAT-- I am doing Take One this year for EC Generalist. I am already starting to read my standards. For me it is a good time to study them because I have the time before school starts. I have highlighted important parts of each standard and wrote notes on them. You can start working on your Documented Accomplishments because you can go back a few years for those.
Here are a few other tips for you. I attended a summer NBCT retreat and it has helped me a lot.
1. Make sure you know the Big Ideas for science. I believe there are also some for math.
2. Have someone read your writing. This way you can get a clear idea if you are answering the questions.
3. When you are answering in the questions for an entry, you might want to write the question and then answer it underneath. Type the question in red and the answer in black. When your done, you can put it into paragraph form.
4. Video tape your class a few times before you film your lesson. That way you tell if you can hear your students. It will also help the students get used to the camera.
5. Send home student permission slips for videoing home at the beginning of the year. That way you can start videoing as soon as possible.
I hope that you have a good principal who is willing to aid you in any was possible. Are there any teachers in your school or district that have been through the NBCT process? They would be good people to talk with. You might even want to check with your local university and see if they have any support groups or ways to help you. I am working with my local university. We have a profession NBCT group. There are NBCT teachers, teachers waiting for certification, teachers starting NBCT, and pre-candidates. We meet monthly and have a summer and winter retreat.
I hope this is helpful to you. If you need anything else let me know. I will am here to help and encourage you and all other NBCT candidates.
I, too, have started reading the standards. I was real excited to read the big ideas in science because I have all those national standards books. I just finished a 6 credit hour class in teaching science. It was a grant for our county (our district was the only one that went for it!) from the American Association for the Advancement of Science (I think that's who sponsored it). Consequently as I read through the big ideas, I was thrilled that I knew so much of it. In fact, we've gotten at least 15 books on science and teaching science that should come in handy.
I have started to compile a list of accomplishments, but I am a little stuck on how to start the writing. Oddly enough, I am a writer, but I am kind of at a loss right now as to where to start.
Unfortunately I teach in a very secluded area, at least 35 miles from any other town, and to top it off, I live even further out! Anyway, my state coordinator said there is an online course that I can take to "prepare me," even though I have already started. I will take that and I may drive the 75 miles to a couple of the support meetings. Oh Lord, what did I get myself into.
Thank you for the suggestions on video taping. I will put them to use. I hope to hear from you throughout this process. Thank you again,
CAT
a good format to use is make a template on your computer in word in which you list all of the questions and then type in and save what you write as you write it.....you need to answer the questions that they ask in writing your entry.....and address the standards as you are writing - the book by Jerry L. Parks that I recommended on another thread has three lists of buzzwords......hope that helps.
Hi, I changed my cert (75 bucks!) because my state coordinator said the EC-MC Literacy-LA cert was a specialty and that that would limit where I can use it. As a generalist I am qualified for any primary position, not just a reading specialist. I like that better because I love teaching all the subjects and I want my own class.
The online pre-candidacy course is one that is put out by azk12.org. I don't know if you have to be an AZ resident or not. YOu might consider checking it out. So far, I have not seen it announced on their website; my state coordinator found it for me and actually talked to the person who arranges it. Are you going for ec-gen this year?
No, I am doing the literacy cert. I was interested in your reasons for changing because I had considered EC - Gen when I first began looking into the different certificates. I even looked at it again last week, but decided my interests were more suited to literacy. I have 6 years in first, a year in second, a year in a 1/2 combo, and a year in K behind me ... I am hoping that experience will help me. :-) How nice that you have a state coordinator to help you! Have you joined the EC-Gen Yahoo group? It's very good ... I joined that and the EC-MC Literacy group. I figure the more I read and know about the process, the more prepared I will be.
Does anyone have any information on any materials I can use for my certification? I am taking the English as a New Language for K-5 and I am having a hard time finding advice and materials that will help me with my portfolio. I am in the process of finishing Entry 4, but I still need to work on 1,2,and 3. Please help.
you need to repost this in a new thread. This was so far down, very few will see it. Have you contacted your state coordinator. Mine hooked me up with an incredible facilitating team. I have never felt more supported in all my life. If you can arrange that, do it. They will have all the materials you need. Also, check yahoo. they have an awesome group for ec-gen. They may have something for your certificate area.
Hi! I am interested in joining the EC-MC Literacy group. How do I go about doing this? I have completed my E4. I am very interested in getting tips for the EC-MC Literacy cert.
