Social Studies Help!

This is my first year doing self-contained. I have departmentalized for Science and Social Studies all along and this year I am teaching them both. Anyhows, I know that 3rd grade focuses on communities as their big idea. Do you all have any good ideas for teaching economy or leaders in your community? I was looking for hands-on projects that the kids could be involved in. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

If you will google that you might find some ideas. In Georgia we have a very active organization that works directly with the school system where I teach, but I don't know about Texas. Check it out and PM me if you have specific questions.

As much as they were pushing our teaching economics in the elementary classroom, I have a feeling that most states have a similar site with great information.

I have added two chapter books to read while we study economics in SS. The Shoeshine Girl and Max Malone Makes a Million are the titles. They help us to use the economics vocabulary we are learning into a discussion about the plot and characters from the books.
