Math Fact Idea?????

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I posted this on the Math board but haven't gotten any replies and I wanted some other teacher opinions.

I was just trying to come up with some ideas for keeping track of student progress of timed tests!! This is my first year in 3rd grade (moved from 2nd) and I was not happy with their progress last year so I wanted to make it more of a big deal this year!!

Some teachers use Rocket Math at our school so I am going to use just the tests and start with addition. I was going to make a sunflower and for every test they pass they get to add a petal, hopefully filling it and getting to Z. Then moving on to subtraction and a new idea. Does this make sense? But then I was thinking that this might not be very exciting for them - not like the using the sundae idea but I wanted to save that for the Multiplication mastery tests.

Then I could use snowflakes for subtraction facts, etc.

Any ideas???

hmm...what about another food theme? Like a popcorn bag for each student and they get a piece of popcorn for each test they pass. When their bag is "full" or has all of the popcorn pieces on it or above it then they get real popcorn. That would be easy and cheap to do with microwave popcorn.
(I saw an idea like this somewhere)

Or even pizzas and then they add certain toppings when they pass tests.

You could have a cone with each student's name on it and then add a scoop of ice cream when they pass.

Could you put cutouts of rockets on a b.b. and move them up as the students progress through the levels? Then when they pass the final test, they get some sort of treat?

I do rocket math with my first graders and they love it!

I have seen a teacher that had a gumball machine for each student on a BB and they added a gumball to it each time they passed you could also use different colors for different problems, add, sub. etc.

When I was student teaching my master teacher had a pizza mastery theme. It was for multiplication but could easily work for addition. A picture of a pizza was cut into 12 slices. There was a little bit of trim around the pizza that stated the fact on it (x11's, etc.) Every time a student passed a drill they got a slice of pizza. She had a BB with red checkered napkins with paper plates on them. The students glued the pizza slices onto the plate. When they filled the plate up they were invited to a pizza party she held once a month. It was a really cute BB.
Good luck!
