Dictation Sentences

I want to do 1 dictation sentence a day in journals, but I've never done this before.

Do I just make up any sentence?

Do I make sure to use words that have skills we are studying at the moment?

Help!

We have 3 sentences a week that go along with the spelling words/pattern.

I have done sentence dictation before, and we used it with our spelling words. We also combined it with our language arts skill we were working on that week. I would give them 2 sentences at the beginning of the week and then they would get 2 additional sentences on their spelling test. So they had 5 spellings words called out, and 4 sentence dictation with the their other 5 spelling words in their sentence dictation. I then took a spelling grade and a language grade from their end of the week test. This was for third graders, so you might use fewer words and sentences for younger grades. Hope this helps!

I use a dictation sentence with our weekly spelling test. I use old words/skills and our current spelling words. I generally just make up the sentence. I try to do it before hand but there were a couple of times I did it right then! =/

I use dictation sentences one day a week during our word work time. I teach first grade, so in the beginning of the year, I start with 1-2 sentences. By the end of the year, we have 5. I use old words, skills, word patterns, current spelling words, word wall words, etc for my sentences. I find that when I do these, it really encourages the kids to use the word wall because as I am dictating the sentence, I will say things like, "thats a word wall word" or that was a spelling word" or "that's one of our word family words."
Hope this helps.

Could each of you explain your objective for dictations sentences.
At the end of a spelling test I have my students write 2-3 sentences using any of their spelling words (their choice) and give them a grammar rule to follow in making up their sentence. I also use this for a handwriting grade.
